For those of you in the UK, or who can pretend you’re in the UK, here’s Episode 1 of BBC2’s The Bible’s Buried Secrets, hosted by University of Exeter’s Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou.

It turns out that the famous old Bible story – you know the one about a shepherd-boy who kills a ten-foot giant, gets selected as king by a prophet who claims to be guided by an ancient Semitic deity called Yahweh, soothes evil spirits by playing a harp, and conquers most of the ancient Levant – has gone and stretched a few of the facts. Whoever would’ve seen that coming?

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed last night’s program and very much looking forward to the next episode. As a professed atheist, you can imagine my delight with this program….it’s taken this long to finally publicly provoke and challenge such religious dogmas which, thanks to the likes of such polemicists as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens who have finally brought to the fore the need for such a debate.

  2. I am sure that lots of people were delighted by it—but it did not weigh ‘Best evidence for and against the biblical David…his united kingdom and the existence of David himself’ as she had promised. So I don’t think it helps the discussion on..
